Generation 4

Great-Great-Grandfather GEORGE GLADING and Elizabeth Gillenwater had the following children:    (ie my Great Great-Uncles and Aunts)

i. WILLIAM GLADING was born in 1826. He died in 1849.

ii. THEODORE/THOS ? GLADING was born in 1825 or 6.    Died 1856 at sea    See his story.

iii. ELIZABETH GLADING was born in 1828.

iv. SAMUEL GLADING was born in 1831. He died in 1830 ???? in probably   Rope Lane Ipswich.

A seaman called Samuel Glading b 1831 served ( 1961 census) on the ‘Lady Jocelyn’  registered Holyhead then in Kent.    In 1862 A seaman called Samuel Glading of Rope Walk was found in the Arboretum at 9PM and was charged with wilful damage to a fence. Fined 10s.

v. Great-Grandfather  BENJAMIN² GLADING was born about 1834 in Ipswich. He died in 1907 in Ipswich (?4 Trinity Cotts, B Hamlet Ipswich).

In 1841  Census all 5 children were living at home (Rope Lane, St Clement)

In 1851 only Benjamin was at home.

In 1861 there was Mary a daughter-in-law (husband at sea)   and a  grandson George born 1856

THEODORE/THOS ? GLADING    3 Jan 1857 Report: Thomas Glading, Chief Mate, son of George Glading butcher of Rope-walk Ipswich, was drowned when the American Barque Maria sank off North Carolina en route to Boston. Buried in North Carolina.

In 1861 census Benjamin and Emma had Thomas b 1860 at home   (40 Rope Lane).

In 1871 at Bulls Yard there was no Thomas, but there were  Benjamin,  Elizabeth 1862, Benjamin 1864, Mary Ann 1866   (??),   Sarah 1868,  Alice. 1870.  No Eliza

In 1881   Benjamin           1863, May           1865, Sarah         186, Alice             1868, Eliza            1870,  James       1872,  Elvina                1876., William    1880,    

And   [2] Great-Grandfather Benjamin  Glading   the older remarried, at age 66,  on 24/1/1898 a widow called Sarah, who was born as Sarah Haddock   (b 20/1/1855  Rattlesden Suffolk  d  1939?   ).  She had married a John Gladwell (b1855 d  1891  ) and they had had 3 children, the oldest being Margaret Gladwell, plus George and  ???…..

Great-Grandfather and Sarah had . BENJAMIN METHUEN GLADING (sometimes Methaen)  was born in 1900 in Back Hamlet, Ipswich.   B Cert: Ipswich Eastern no 365

  He died in 1975. He married EDITH HARVE    date=xxxx   . She was born in 1898. She died in 1984.

To check –Sarah later  married  in 1914 a George S Powling (b c 1860/4)?  Check a widower with 6 children

1. Benjamin (Lewis)  Glading  married in 1886  [1] Elizabeth Scarlett  (b abt 1861 in Tuddenham, Suffolk.    d 1894? – she only in 1891 census)

2. and Benjamin Lewis Glading,widower, remarried   [2]-24/6/ 1894-  to Margaret Gladwell, spinster  (b 4/7/1875      d 1896 aged 21)

Benjamin and Margaret had a son who they called  BENJAMIN GLADING  who died in infancy. -- Benjamin George Glading b 2Q1895,  died  3Q1896…

So he married his Father’s Wife’s Daughter………..

3. Then Benjamin (Lewis)  Glading, widower,  married aged 33    28/11/1897 Minnie Caroline Fox (b 12/2/1867 d 1917).   She only in 1901 1911 census

Benjamin Lewis Glading and Minnie Caroline had:

ii.     My Father GEORGE FENN GLADING was born on 22 May 1908

Benjamin Methuen Glading and Edith Harvey had the following children:

iv.        IAN ELLIOT GLADING was born in 1936. He married MARY EDNA PRESSLER. She was born in 1932.  Ian Elliot Glading and Mary Edna Pressler had the following children:

a) MICHAEL JOHN⁵ GLADING was born in 1955. He married SUSAN STANIFORD.

b) LYNDA GLADING was born in 1960.

EDWARD⁴ GLADING (Benjamin Lewis³, Benjamin², George¹) was born in 1904. He married ? ??? in 1925.

GEORGE FENN⁴ GLADING (Benjamin Lewis³, Benjamin², George¹) was born on 22 May 1908 in 7 Angel Lane, Ipswich, Suffolk. He died on 03 Oct 1988 in Reading, Berks. He married DOROTHY ROSE LANSLEY. She was born in Caterham.
